It's skipper Walbridge

From the Echo, first published Monday 20th Oct 2003.

SEAN Walbridge is the new captain of Dorset's Minor Counties cricket team.

The ex-Dorchester skipper succeeds Stuart Rintoul who stood down at the end of last season. Left-arm spinner Walbridge, who plays his club cricket for Bourne-mouth in the Southern League, was elected by the county's management committee last night.

Members also voted in Ian Swarbrick as the side's new manager following Pete Moxam's decision to retire from the post - although both decision have to be ratified at the full AGM in April. "Personally I'm delighted for Sean. He's a loyal, committed and dedicated member of the Dorset team and he has worked hard as Stuart's vice-captain over the past couple of seasons.

"He's been turning out for his county for about 12 years now, taking more than 200 wickets in that time and the committee felt that he thoroughly deserved his chance."

Walbridge, who can now look forward to leading his side into action against Yorkshire in next summer's C&G Trophy at Dean Park, said today that he was honoured to have the committee's backing.

He added: "Obviously it's a dream come true and I'm very proud and honoured to be the committee's choice to captain my county. Stuart Rintoul will be a hard act to follow but, if ratified at the AGM, I'm really looking forward to the challenge."

Meanwhile Swarwick, who's son Matt is a regular in the Dorset line-up, joins the county following a spell in management at Bournemouth CC.

Dorset have signed ex-Glamorgan fast bowler Owen Parkin. The ex-Bournemouth Grammar School pupil has joined his home county after 11 years with the Welsh outfit.

Moxam explained: "We are desperately in need of experienced bowlers and Owen fits the bill perfectly.

"He is a right arm quickie who has had a fantastic career with Glamorgan and it's great that he's decided to come home."
