Ladies do Bridport proud

IN BOWLS terms, Bridport ladies put the club on the map when they came fifth in the country at Leamington Spa.

Unfortunately, they were beaten in all but one discipline in the opening match against Lillington of Warwickshire. Margaret Clapp and Sue Hosking did win the pairs.

Bridport stepped up a gear on the second day, playing Wigton of Cumbria. The fours, skippered by Sue Hawksworth won, as did the pairs.

In the final game against Baldock, Lincolnshire, Frances Hewett won the singles and Hawksworth's four triumphed again.

The 100 per cent record for Clapp and Hosking was brought to an end with a very wayward wood from the Lincolnshire ship and they lost by five shots.

From an original field of 825 clubs, Bridport's final fifth position was a tremendous achievement.

Squad: singles: Frances Hewett; Pairs - Margaret Clapp and Sue Hosking; Triples - Ronnie Stevenson, Chris Cowdrey, Sheila Jones; Rinks - Julie Flatters, Edna Cumberland, Annie Bowden, Sue Hawksworth. Reserve: Delphine Street.

Golf

MIKE Coleman has never won a trophy at Lyme, even after six years of trying. Monday seemed just the same. He hit a good drive on his first hole - the 10th - a good second and then took no less than four shots to reach the hole. It was a bogey competition and six shots on a par four was a minus.

Things did not get much better until his fifth hole, the par 5 14th which he parred for a plus and another on the next.

It got better when Mike, who lives at Bradpole near Bridport, parred the 17th and the 18th for plus 3 at halftime.

The second half was not quite as good but Mike continued to drive with his new Wilson Deep Red 3 wood - a birthday present from his wife which he tried to hide after its first two unsuccessful outings - and the ball carried 20 yards further than normal.

He ended the round with +4, to carry off the seniors' Briggs Trophy. "I was just happy because I felt I was playing well and that birthday present was finally working," he said.

In second place was 64-year-old David Guy, a 21-handicapper from Stockland. He also had +4 but lost it on countback despite a string of fours on the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th.

Third was Derek Wenn, exhausted from town crier duties at Saturday's Colyford Goose Fair, with +3.
