From the Echo, first published Thursday 2nd Oct 2003.
BRIDPORT-born triathlete Shane Scadding was first to cross the line from a field of almost 300 in the South Coast Classic.
Superfit Shane, who now lives in Ireland, pushed himself to a personal best time of 1:44 to take his first competition victory at Seaford in East Sussex.
Aged 36, he only took up the sport three years ago and after several top 20 successes, is now ranked sixth in Ireland.
Shane was always a keen athlete as a youngster, taking part in many sporting events in West Dorset, before he moved away for work.
He now runs for the Carrick-on-Suir club near Waterford, while proud mum Dyllis and dad Dennis still live in West Bay.
