Drenched fisherman sparks an alert

From the Echo, first published Thursday 2nd Oct 2003.

A fisherman sparked a major alert when he abandoned his gear and went home to get changed after being soaked by a wave on Chesil Beach.

His stool, kettle, stove, lamp and clothing were found on Chesil Beach, west of Ferrybridge, by worried members of the public who called Portland Coastguard.

They mounted a search of the area with coastguard teams from Portland Bill and Wyke Regis and the rescue helicopter from Portland.

The embarrassed fisherman later made a call to Dorset Police saying he had left his belongings to go home and dry off. Portland Coastguard said: "We were satisfied that the call was genuine and we called the search off."
