Musical help for young people

From the Echo, first published Thursday 2nd Oct 2003.

YOUNG people have been using music to fight their disabilities in a series of workshops in Dorset.

The youngsters, who have learning difficulties and mental health problems, have tried their hands at folk music in taster sessions during September.

Now they are to take part in world music workshops in October as part of the Live Music Now! project.

Pupils have joined in from Westfield Technology College and Wyvern School in Weymouth, Purbeck View School in Swanage, the Prince of Wales School in Dorchester, Mountjoy School in Bridport and Weymouth College.

Young people from social services centres in Weymouth and Bridport have also signed up for the sessions.

Professional young musicians are running the workshops and will continue to work with the schools after the 18-month project has finished.

The National Foundation for Youth Music and councils have provided the funds.
