Help offer to isolated graduates

From the Echo, first published Thursday 2nd Oct 2003.

LONELY graduates are being invited to meet up with like-minded people in Dorset.

Rural Grads has been set up by 21-year-old Daisy Warner, of Rax Lane in Bridport, after she recently returned from Birmingham University and found many of her old friends were no longer around.

Former Thomas Hardye School pupil Daisy said: "I've lived here since I was little but a lot of my school friends have either gone back to university to complete their fourth year or have gone travelling.

"Since I've been back I've realised that once you decide it's time to start making some serious decisions about life it can all get a bit daunting.

"I thought there must be a lot of others in the same boat who have just graduated and are living back with their parents while they sort themselves out or people who have moved here to start a new job after graduating who might want to get together.

"Any graduates are welcome to join us to share their agonies over filling in application forms, scouring the Internet for jobs or their confusions over which career choice would suit them best.

"Hopefully we can share any hints and tips."

Daisy, who studied for a psychology degree and hopes to get into marketing, said although the main aim of the society was to meet people and socialise, she hopes to introduce guest speakers to the meetings from the world of work to talk about what skills employers are looking for.

She said: "I've been applying for lots of jobs and noticed it's tough when you are applying for your first proper job to know what it is people are looking for.

"I thought if employers from different professions can come and give us an idea of what they're after then that would take a lot of the worry and guess work out of it."
