Memorial on internet for loved ones

From the Echo, first published Thursday 16th Oct 2003.

A ROLL of honour to commemorate the people of Poole and surrounding areas who died during military conflicts since 1900 will be created on the internet.

Not only will it mark the contribution and sacrifices made by locals, it will also serve as a resource for people tracing their ancestors and relatives.

"This website will enable anyone nationwide and worldwide to help update this lasting testament to the men and women of Poole who died for their country," said Bob Harris, of Poole council.

When complete, visitors will be able to search for people using details such as names and service regiment, squadron or naval branch.

If known, the location of the grave or memorial will be listed.

Families will have the opportunity to complete a record of additional information or missing names and upload pictures and biographies.

The project is run by the council and Bournemouth-based firm 4T2 Multimedia.

An appeal is being made for volunteers and companies to help input data from three databases in time to launch on Remembrance Day.

Mike Hawkyard, director of 4T2 Multimedia, said his company was proud to be helping out with the project and would be donating its fee for creating the website to the Poppy Appeal.

He added: "With the very tight deadline for this project we are hoping other local companies may be able to spare a few members of their staff for a couple of hours to help."

People who are able to spare time and would like to get involved should contact Gemma Smith at 4T2 on 01202 767300.

When completed the website address will be www.pooleatwar.com
