In the Christmas drink

From the Echo, first published Thursday 27th Dec 2001.

THE chilly waters couldn't put off some of Weymouth's most dedicated swimmers - as they braved the Christmas Day cold for the annual Lions' Harbour Swim.

Hundreds of people turned out to watch intrepid swimmers, young and old, take the plunge.

The crowds were treated to the sight of Santa Claus - who must have fancied a refreshing dip after a hard night's work - line up to try his chances against the other competitors.

Spectators wrapped up against the winter chill saw some of Weymouth's hardiest battle it out in the good-natured competition organised by the Weymouth Lions.

Competitors dived into the freezing waters of the town's harbour, under the watchful eyes of safety teams, to help raise money for charity.

Once they were in, the swimmers needed no encouragement to get to the other side as quickly as they could - but the Christmas day crowds lining the quayside showed their admiration - cheering competitors on.

Weymouth and Portland mayor Joy Stanley was among the crowds to watch the swimmers, together with Lions president Russ Wooley, who organised this year's event.

Trophies were presented in five classes, with Rebecca Kelly receiving the cup in the senior ladies class, Hannah Rowles the Junior Girls Shield, and Jack Wiltshire receiving this year's Open Trophy.

Bob Holman was presented with the cup for the winner of the Masters' Class.
