DCCI International Award sponsored by Barclays - WINNER: SF Detection

GOING for growth on a global scale is the prime aim of SF Detection, a leading manufacturer of lifesaving carbon monoxide detectors.

With export sales up by 380 per cent since 1999, the firm's commitment to international trade is clear.

Poole-based SF Detection started as a joint venture between Sieger, the UK's leading industrial gas detection manufacturer, and Figaro, the world's largest manufacturer of semi-conductor sensors, based in Japan.

The company is now a solely owned subsidiary of Zellweger Analytics.

SF Detection produces alarms which detect natural gas, carbon monoxide and liquefied petroleum gas in homes where there is a fossil-fuelled energy source.

SF Detection safety alarms have been chosen by overseas organisations on every continent.

In the year 2000, export turnover reached almost £250,000, while this year it is forecast to reach £950,000, accounting for 20 per cent of its estimated 2001 turnover of £5 million.

Over the past two years, SF Detection's increased focus on the export market has enabled a greater understanding of the global market place and future developments.

Export skills required by staff include selling, finance, documentation, marketing and languages.

To ensure continuing future prosperity, a co-ordinated strategic approach to trade promotion and development has been adopted.
